Key facts

  • US citizens and most other nationalities need an e-Visa for Vietnam.
  • Official fee: $25 single entry, $50 multiple entry; valid up to 90 days.
  • Official processing is 3 working days — paused over public holidays like Tet (next ~6 Feb 2027).
  • Phu Quoc island allows 30 days visa-free if you only visit Phu Quoc.

Who needs a Vietnam e-Visa?

Since 15 August 2023, Vietnam’s e-Visa is open to citizens of all countries, for up to 90 days. Some nationalities are visa-exempt for 45 days (12 countries from 15 March 2025, 12 more European countries from 15 August 2025), but the United States is not on either list — US citizens need an e-Visa.

Fees checked against the official portal on 21 October 2026. The fee is non-refundable if refused.

Processing time

The official processing time is 3 working days. It pauses during public holidays — most importantly Tet (Lunar New Year), which next falls around 6 February 2027. If you travel in late January or February, apply early. Some agencies sell “holiday rush” services at much higher prices; plan ahead and you won’t need one.

Documents you need

  • Passport valid 6+ months from arrival with 2 blank pages.
  • A clear scan of the passport data page.
  • A recent passport-style photo (4×6 cm, white background, no glasses).
  • Intended entry and exit ports and dates, and your first address.

How to apply

  1. Use the official portal (evisa.gov.vn, moved there on 11 November 2024) or a service you trust.
  2. Upload the photo and passport scan; fill the form exactly as in your passport.
  3. Pay the fee and note your registration code.
  4. After approval, download and print the e-Visa. Check every character of your name and passport number.

Many look-alike sites mimic the official portal and charge extra. The official one ends in .gov.vn. A legitimate service will show its total price and say clearly that it isn’t the government.

The Phu Quoc exception

Foreigners flying directly to Phu Quoc island and staying only there can visit 30 days visa-free. If you plan to continue to the mainland, get an e-Visa.

Arrival tips

  • A free, optional Pre-Arrival Information pilot started at Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh City) on 15 April 2026. It is not a visa and it is not mandatory — be wary of sites selling a “Vietnam arrival card”.
  • Currency is the dong (VND); cards are accepted in cities, cash rules in markets.
  • Grab is the go-to for rides in major cities.
